Farrowing Technician

Objective: Offer a full-time position specializing in the daily production tasks of Wakefield Pork's farrowing department to a highly dedicated individual interested in the pork industry who can bring an element of team dynamics to WPI's goal-oriented system.

Salary: A wage proposal will be mailed to the applicant offered the position after the interview process. Salary is determined on applicant's skill and background of industry.

Duties Performed:

Sow Health & Farrowing (Birthing)

  • Assist Farrowingn Department Leader with pre-farrow preparations.
  • Induce sows to initiate batch farrowing.
  • Monitor farrowing progress and practice proper delivery procedures.
  • Treat & vaccinate sows, as directed.
  • Keep lactating rooms at full capacity

Litter Care & Weaning

  • Execute proper Day-One pig care techniques.
  • Adjust heat lamps to create4 zonal heating optimal for litter comfort and health.
  • Treat & vaccinated piglets, as directed.
  • Identify piglets requiring a nurse sow or litter swap.
  • Assist Department Leader to ensure piglets are with correct sow and crate; transfer and size piglets as directed.
  • Process litters and castrate piglets.
  • Assist department on Wean Day, loading weaner pigs for transport.

Herd Health

  • Manage nutrition and feeding schedules of lactating animals according to WPI protocol.
  • Practice highest standards of humane treatment of animals.
  • Follow all WPI biosecurity policies as enforced by management.

Departement Management/Barn Environment

  • Assist with monthly/weekly inventory counts for documentation.
  • Ensure a clean work and animal living environment.
  • o Assist in powerwashing, as assigned.
  • o Perform maintenance duties as needed.
  • Meet WPI training program requirements, demonstrating knowledge & skill of company procedure.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices during all work activities according to the WPI safety program guidelines.
  • Exhibit strong teamwork in efforts to meet production targets, accept change and new technology, and willingness to participate in special projects.
  • Keep current PQA certification.
