Environmental Stewardship

Wakefield Pork, Inc. believes good stewardship of land and water resources is easiest achieved with good facility management. WPI works with producers to maintain facilities through continued interaction and communication with our field staff representatives. By maintaining close relationships with our producers, we can share the most effective ways to manage the micro-environments in and near our facilities. Some of the methods WPI has used to reduce our environmental impact include:

  • Using tree and shrub lines near hog facilities as a natural air filter.
  • Utilizing biofilters that use organic materials like wood bark to absorb odors.
  • Using pit additives that promote good bacterial digestion.
  • Maintaining Manure Management Plans as required by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

What is a Manure Management Plan?

A Manure Management Plan is a living document that details the manure storage, handling and testing practices for a hog confinement facility. It regularly tests and documents manure and soil nutrient levels in order to determine manure application rates that are suitable for the environment.
